Your off-road cycling journey starts here with Grit Grrrls.

What is off-road cycling is?

Off-road cycling refers to riding bicycles on non-paved surfaces, such as dirt trails, gravel paths, or forested terrain. It includes various disciplines like mountain biking, cyclocross, and gravel cycling, offering riders a challenging and adventurous experience away from traditional roads.

Different off-road disciplines:

Gravel riding

Gravel is quickly becoming the go-to off-road activity that involves riding bicycles on natural terrain, this can include everything from forest paths, singletrack trails, canal tow paths, disused railways and of course gravel. It’s a versatile and adventurous form of cycling that often allows you to explore rural or scenic areas.

Mountain biking (MTB)

Mountain biking can be a wide range of things and is accessible to everyone. You can head to trail centres where you will find graded routes for beginner mountain bikers up to expert. Mountain biking typically involves more rugged terrain, including trails, mountains, and forests, providing an exhilarating outdoor experience.

Why is off road cycling so much fun?

Off-road cycling is fun for several reasons. It offers a sense of adventure and exploration as you navigate diverse terrains. The physical challenge of handling uneven surfaces and navigating obstacles adds excitement. Additionally, the connection with nature and the outdoors, away from traditional roads, enhances the overall experience, making off-road cycling a rewarding and enjoyable activity for many.

What kit will I need?

For off-road cycling, essential kit includes a mountain or gravel bike designed for varied terrain, a well-fitted helmet for safety, durable shoes with good traction, and gloves for hand protection. Depending on the terrain and conditions, additional gear like knee and elbow pads, appropriate clothing for weather, and a hydration system may be necessary. Regular maintenance tools and a spare tube for quick repairs are also advisable. Tyre width can range between 32mm upwards depending on rider preference.

Of course, this is the ideal but as we know, when you’re starting out you may not have all these things, as long as you have a bike with two wheels that is in good working order, and a helmet, you will be able to take part in off-road cycling. If you enjoy it, everything else will follow.

What should I wear for off-road cycling?

Wear moisture-wicking and breathable clothing for off-road cycling to stay comfortable. Opt for padded shorts for cushioning, leggings or baggy shorts, a moisture-wicking jersey, and consider a lightweight, weather-appropriate jacket. Shoes with good grip, and don’t forget a well-fitted helmet for safety. Depending on the trail and weather, you might also want gloves for hand protection and, if mountain biking, knee and elbow pads for added safety.

The above will make your cycling journey extra comfy, so you will get the most out of your ride and be comfortable. However, you can ride in whatever makes you most comfortable.
