TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST GROUP RIDE

A illustration of a bike

We get it – first group rides can be a bit nerve-wracking, but fear not! Let’s roll through some tips to boost your confidence.

Know the ride vibe:

A ‘no-drop’ ride means no one gets left behind, and speed demons wait at the top of hills. We ride at conversational speed and adjust depending on the group ability.

Bike check 101:

Learn the ‘A B C check’ to inspect your bike thoroughly. At the very least, ensure brakes are efficient, and tyres are pumped up. Tyre pressure? Depends on your ride and weather conditions – but a good starting point would be 30psi upwards to 40psi.

Prep the night before:

Early starts? Been there. Lay out your gear the night before to avoid forgetting essentials.

What to pack:

Grab your essentials: water bottle, snacks, spare tube, tyre levers, mini-pump, and cash/bank card. Toss in a jacket if you think you might get cold. Oh, and helmets are a must – for your personal safety, of course.

On the ride:

Arrive early, introduce yourself to the group, and let them know if it’s your first ride. Keep a good pace, leave at least 1 bike length to the rider in front, but avoid wheel overlaps – we don’t want any crashes. If you’re struggling, no shame in signalling for a breather.

Shouts and signals:

Hear shouts or see hand signals? It’s the language of road safety. Repeat calls or gestures to keep the message flowing. Don’t worry; you’ll pick it up quickly. Questions? Just ask – we’re here to guide you.

Punctures happen:

Flat tyre fear? Fear not! Be sure to pack a spare inner tube, speak to your local bike store for advise on what inner tube you require.

We’ve got a bike maintenance workshop coming your way in the near future.

Social rides:

The rides are social rides so you will be responsible for yourself and your bike. Make sure you bring a spare inner tube, a pump, snacks and plenty of water.
